LockedLessons
4 lessons, in order.
- Lesson 1: Ask for email after the visitor has enough context
Choose popup timing and repeat exposure from the interruption cost and the visitor's demonstrated context.
Locked✓ - Lesson 2: Offer a signup promise the business can deliver
Define what the subscriber receives, under what conditions, and how the form and first message prove the promise.
Locked✓ - Lesson 3: Collect the next useful profile field later
Ask for the minimum contact and consent data at signup, then request another field only when it unlocks an immediate customer benefit or operating decision.
Locked✓ - Lesson 4: Keep mobile capture out of the visitor's way
Use a compact, dismissible capture pattern that preserves the page task, keyboard access, and a truthful signup promise on small screens.
Locked✓
On-site capture trades attention for permission to communicate later. The business outcome is not the largest possible list. It is a contact record created through a clear promise, at a moment that does not unnecessarily block the visitor's current job, with consent and delivery behavior the team can explain.
This module separates two decisions that are often collapsed into one popup setting. Timing and frequency decide when the interruption appears and when it returns. Value exchange decides what the visitor receives and what the business must deliver. Changing one does not automatically fix the other.
Start with timing and frequency. Identify the page's primary job, choose evidence that the visitor has enough context, and set rules for signup, dismissal, failure, and repeat exposure. Then define the value exchange: audience, promise, delivery, conditions, and owner. Shopify Forms can capture marketing consent, show a success state or discount, tag a customer, and connect a workflow, but the operator still chooses the promise and approved consent route.1
Module diagnostic
Open the active form as a new visitor. Before submitting, can you answer all of these?
- Why is this appearing now?
- What do I receive?
- What material conditions apply?
- What messages am I agreeing to?
- What happens if I dismiss or submit?
The first unclear answer is the design or operating gap to fix.
Assignment
Create a one-page capture brief for one form. Record its eligible audience, trigger, repeat-exposure rule, promise, conditions, consent route, success state, first message, suppressions, dependencies, and owner. Test the full path with an eligible new contact and one exception, such as an existing or unsubscribed contact.
