Build comparison only for products that need it
Use a side-by-side tool when shoppers must hold too many reliable specifications in memory to choose from the list.
Skip this if Small or visually led assortments whose decisive differences already fit clearly on product cards
Build a comparison tool when a shopper needs to evaluate several products across more reliable attributes than the list can show at once. Do not add one merely because competitors have a “Compare” checkbox.
The mechanism is memory. A shopper can scan a few visible differences across adjacent cards. A spec-driven choice becomes harder when they must open several product pages, remember values, return to the list, and reconstruct which item had which capability. Baymard’s testing supports side-by-side comparison for spec-driven products and highlights visible selection controls and persistent selected-item feedback.[1]
