Sorting and comparison help shoppers evaluate products that are already eligible. The business outcome is a list ordered and described around the criteria that matter, without hiding products behind unreliable rankings.

This module covers the difference between hard filters and soft ranking preferences, which sort options a catalog needs, how the default order is chosen, and what information must stay comparable across cards. These decisions belong together because a sort is only credible when its data and visible product information explain the resulting order. Baymard distinguishes filtering, which changes what is included, from sorting, which changes sequence, and supports category-specific ranking criteria when they fit the product type.1

Start with shopper intent and data quality. Decide which attributes exclude products, which merely change preference order, and which comparisons require side-by-side information. Then define the default and alternative sorts. Do not add a label such as “best-selling” until the team can explain the underlying ranking.

Module diagnostic

Choose a collection with enough products to reorder. Run every available sort and inspect the first, middle, and last items. Include sale prices, missing ratings, tied values, unavailable items, and incomplete category-specific data. Record any order the team cannot explain or any comparison criterion missing from the cards.

Small assignment

Create a sort specification for one collection: shopper intent, source field, direction, missing-value behavior, tie behavior, default order, mobile label, owner, and QA examples. Remove options with no defensible use case.
