Sorting changes sequence. Filtering changes membership. Offer a sort when shoppers want to see the same eligible products in a different order, not because another store has it.
Baymard observed common demand for price, rating, best-selling, and newest sorts on large ecommerce sites, plus category-specific criteria in some contexts.[1][2] Treat those as candidate intents, not a compulsory four-item menu for every catalog.
