  2. Lesson 2: Use thematic filters only when the theme changes suitability

Offer shopper-facing themes such as occasion, use, or style only when each value has a governed product rule.

Filter selection is a catalog decision before it is a storefront control. The business outcome is a product list shoppers can narrow by meaningful constraints without exposing internal data or unnecessary choices.

This module covers which attributes deserve filters, how the set changes by category, how card information informs filter choices, and how stored values become shopper-facing labels. These decisions belong together because a filter is only as useful as its source data and the buying question it answers. Shopify supports standard and custom filter sources, renamed labels, grouped values, and manual configuration through Search & Discovery, but display still depends on the active theme.1

Work in this order: identify exclusion criteria, inspect product data, choose the smallest useful set, translate labels and values, then verify the live theme. Adding every available source first creates cleanup work and makes the product list harder to read.

Module diagnostic

Choose one commercially important collection. List the attributes shoppers need to reject unsuitable products and the preferences they use to narrow. Compare that list with product-card information, current filters, product options, metafields, metaobjects, and tags. Mark missing values, inconsistent language, operational fields, duplicate meanings, and filters that do not reduce the list meaningfully.

Small assignment

Produce a filter specification for that collection. For each proposed filter, name the customer question, data source, shopper-facing label, value cleanup required, order, owner, and desktop/mobile QA case. Include filters to remove and why.
