Lessons

3 lessons, in order.

0/3
  1. Lesson 1: Do not require account sign-in before checkout

Required sign-in adds an authentication stop before checkout. Leave the Shopify setting off for a B2C launch, then verify the logged-out flow.

  2. Lesson 2: Offer account access after the order

Let a B2C shopper complete checkout first, then offer account access using information already supplied.

  3. Lesson 3: Optimize checkout work before checkout steps

Audit what shoppers must do and remove unjustified fields before changing Shopify's one-page or three-page layout.

Checkout structure is the work between an accurate cart and completed payment. Atlas synthesis: diagnose the shopper’s tasks and their business reasons before treating page count as the problem. Baymard reports that fields generally affect checkout usability more than steps, while also noting that unusually long flows can still be difficult.1 That supports an audit order, not one ideal structure for every store.

Diagnose the work

Open a logged-out mobile checkout with an ordinary product. Record each task from cart to payment, then assign:

  • the requirement: Shopify, tax, carrier, payment, fraud, market, or merchant
  • the operational owner who uses the value
  • the control surface: native setting, app, provider, or customization
  • a keep, challenge, or remove decision
  • the test case and rollback condition

Shopify exposes only some customer-information options. Other fields remain required, some appear according to country or region, and the settings do not apply to B2B checkout.2 Record these boundaries instead of briefing an unsupported design change.

Assignment

Create a checkout inventory with columns for task or field, purpose, owner, control, decision, and acceptance case. Confirm the active configuration in Settings > Checkout, then preview it on mobile and desktop. Shopify’s editor represents one-page and three-page checkout, but its preview is simulated.3 Complete a test order before accepting a change.

Dependencies include plan, market, B2B, tax, carrier, payment, fraud, and checkout apps. Shopify documents plan limits for some market-specific page and field customization.23 Escalate a platform-owned field to Shopify, an app-owned interruption to the app vendor, and operational uncertainty to the team that consumes the data.

Keep the current layout when required work is clear and the acceptance cases pass. Propose structural customization only when observed failures show that grouping or progression itself is the problem.
