Optimize checkout work before checkout steps
Audit what shoppers must do and remove unjustified fields before changing Shopify's one-page or three-page layout.
Skip this if B2B, regulated-product, or complex-market checkout changes made without the owner of account, tax, carrier, or payment requirements
The decision: reduce unnecessary checkout work before changing the number of checkout pages. A shorter page sequence can still feel long when it contains fields, choices, or interruptions the order does not need.
Baymard’s checkout research reports that the number of form fields users must manage generally affects checkout usability more than the number of steps. It also notes an exception at unusually high step counts.[1] That supports an audit order, not a universal ideal. It does not tell you that every store needs the same field count or that one-page checkout will outperform three-page checkout on your store.
