  1. Lesson 1: Show scarcity only when the constraint is real

Turn truthful inventory, deadline, or capacity constraints into useful urgency without manufacturing pressure.

    Locked

Urgency should explain a real constraint, not create anxiety on demand. A useful cue tells a shopper what is limited, for which offer, and until when. A harmful cue invents stock, resets a timer, or implies demand the business has not measured. The FTC identifies false low-stock messages and baseless countdowns as dark patterns.1

This module starts with one decision: whether a stock, deadline, or capacity constraint is true, specific, current, and useful enough to display. The cue must remain connected to its source after variant changes, inventory updates, market selection, or deadline expiry. Shopify's tracking and continue-selling settings affect whether a quantity can support a low-stock claim.2

Module diagnostic

Inventory every urgency cue across product, cart, campaign, and lifecycle messages. For each, record the claimed constraint, source system, product or variant scope, location or channel scope, refresh behavior, owner, and removal condition. Delete or suppress any cue whose source cannot be demonstrated.

Assignment

Write one implementation brief for a real constraint. Include the exact wording, authoritative field, variants and locations in scope, continue-selling behavior, timezone if relevant, unavailable and error states, mobile placement, and release checks. State whether the work is a theme configuration, custom code change, or systems integration.

When an item becomes unavailable, the scarcity decision ends. Back-in-stock capture belongs to Area 4 because it introduces contact capture, consent, delivery, and attribution decisions.
