  1. Lesson 1: Use honest price anchors

    Show a reference price only when the business can substantiate what it represents.

    Locked

Pricing UX is the discipline of making every visible amount understandable and supportable. The business outcome is a price presentation that survives variant changes, markets, discounts, cart, checkout, and scrutiny without forcing the shopper to reconcile competing claims.

Shopify separates compare-at sale pricing from code-based and automatic discounts, and the active theme decides how sale prices appear on storefront surfaces.1 That technical distinction matters because each display can communicate a different claim.

Sequence the work

Define the current selling price first. Then document the meaning and evidence for any reference price. Add discount messaging only after the calculation and eligibility are known. Finally, inspect every surface where the same product and offer can appear.

For US former-price comparisons, FTC guidance warns against constructing a fictitious higher price to create a saving claim.2 Other markets can differ, so this module teaches substantiation and escalation rather than a universal legal conclusion.

Module diagnostic

Select one promoted product and trace:

  • product and variant price in every active market;
  • reference price and what it represents;
  • percentage or amount-off calculation;
  • discount eligibility and exclusions;
  • product card, product page, cart, and checkout display;
  • retained evidence and removal owner.

Mark every unclear or contradictory number. Do not fix the interface until the business has decided which claim is accurate.

Assignment

Build a price-claim register for one promotion. Include the exact wording, source data, market, dates, surfaces, theme behavior, evidence owner, and removal condition. Escalate market-specific legal questions to qualified review.
