- Lesson 1: Connect email clicks to on-site behavior
Standardize campaign identifiers, verify the landing-to-order path, and report attributed activity without presenting it as causal impact.
Locked✓
The business outcome of this module is email reporting that can support a commercial decision without overstating what the data proves. The covered decisions are how to identify campaign traffic, how to verify the path from message to order, and how to describe attribution limits.
Google Analytics documents UTM parameters for identifying campaign-referred traffic and recommends consistent values for dimensions such as source, medium, and campaign.1 It also defines attribution as assigning credit through a model.2 A provider-attributed order, a GA4 key event, and a Shopify order can therefore describe different records under different rules.
Build the chain in order
- Standardize links: define campaign parameters, casing, separators, dynamic values, and ownership. Do not put recipient identity in URLs.
- Verify collection: follow a controlled message through link wrapping, redirects, landing, consent state, analytics events, and a recoverable Shopify order.
- Reconcile definitions: record each system's window, identity scope, timezone, currency, order state, refund treatment, and credit model.
- Name the inference: report observed paths and attributed activity as such. Use a causal design when the decision requires incremental impact.
Atlas synthesis: disagreement between systems is not automatically a tracking defect. It becomes actionable when the team can explain which definition or collection boundary produced it. An unexplained match is less useful than an explained difference.
Module diagnostic
Choose one email result used in the latest report. Can its owner recover the exact message, final landing URL, campaign dimensions, on-site events, Shopify order basis, attribution window, model, consent limits, and refund handling? If not, the next task is to rebuild the measurement chain, not debate the headline number.
Assignment
Create one comparison table for the email provider, GA4, and Shopify. Add definitions, owners, test evidence, known gaps, and the decision each number informs. Run one controlled click-to-order journey and one competing-channel or direct-return journey. Record how each system assigns credit without forcing totals to agree.
