Variant or separate product

Model one purchase decision as variants and distinct purchase decisions as separate products, then verify Shopify's option, theme, app and channel constraints.

Skip this if marketer-becoming-operator: this is catalog modeling, owned by whoever runs the Shopify admin, with little to pitch or reason from

Catalog structure affects how products appear in search and collections, how inventory and feeds identify them, and how much work later changes require. The default rule is simple: if the shopper is choosing a version of the same offer, use a variant. If they are choosing a meaningfully different offer, use a separate product.

A variant-defining choice creates a distinct purchasable version that needs its own combination of settings such as price, inventory or shipping.[2] Size and color commonly fit that model. A separate product is usually stronger when the choice needs its own title, description, URL, image gallery, audience or merchandising plan.
