Preserve valid input after an error

Keep unaffected form values intact after validation or submission failure while leaving sensitive payment data to secure providers.

After a validation or submission failure, preserve every valid value the shopper does not need to change. Clear only data whose secure owner requires it or whose value became invalid because the underlying state changed.

Re-entry adds work and creates new opportunities for error. Baymard's checkout research supports retaining completed payment input after unrelated errors, within a secure implementation.[1] The lesson-level decision is broader: a failure in one field should not silently erase correct information elsewhere.
