The card-number field should accept spaces and display digits in familiar, card-aware groups while the shopper types. It must not assume every supported card uses the same length or grouping.
Long, uninterrupted digit strings are difficult to transfer and verify. Baymard's checkout testing observed that shoppers used the grouping printed on the card to enter and check the number. Its guidance supports allowing spaces and formatting card numbers according to the detected card type.[1]
