Use one name field only when operations allow it

Shopify can reduce checkout to one required name field, but the simpler input must survive fulfillment and integration checks.

Skip this if

  • B2B checkout, where Shopify's customer-information form settings do not apply
  • Stores whose required carrier, tax, ERP, 3PL, fraud, or customer-service workflow needs separate first and last name values

The decision: use Shopify’s one-field name option only when no required downstream process needs separate first and last name values. The simpler form is useful only if it produces an order the business can fulfill and support correctly.

Baymard observed shoppers pausing, revising, or entering a full name in the first-name field when checkout split names into separate inputs. Its testing found smoother entry with one Full Name field.[1] The public article does not establish a conversion lift or disclose the full study sample, so treat the finding as support for reducing avoidable parsing work, not as a universal mandate.
